CNC Machining Plastic Guide

Commonly asked is, how do you machine engineering plastic?  Machining is a broad term which refers to the measured, carefully calculated manufacturing method employed to produce plastic component parts. Currently, most companies employ computer numerical control or CNC machining. thereby, able to achieve greater precision and accuracy in their end plastic products.

Also, the question of what determines the machining process for a bespoke plastic part? Essentially, the design and construction, adding in the material, you have the main factors which significantly impact the production process.

Careful Considerations

Certainly, when cnc machining plastic, great care and vigilant consideration is especially important. Mainly because plastics susceptibility to problems, such as, warping, cracking, expansion, contraction, and deformation. Further, complicating things is the large selection of plastics and sub forms of plastic available to choose from. Adding the complication of each type exhibiting its own properties and potential machining considerations. These unusual challenges command, an association with a supplier with a great depth of knowledge. Thus, an understanding of the requirements to manufacture your parts from the chosen plastic material.

Plastic CNC Machined Materials

Examples of just some commonly Machined materials are Nylon 6, Cast Nylon, Nylatron MoS2, Glass filled Nylon, Polyester Glass, EM42, Tufnol®, HDPE, LDPE, PE1000, PE500, PTFE, Teflon, PVDF, Acetal, Delrin, Also Peek, Arnite,  SRBP, SRBF, Polypropylene, Polycarbonate, Perspex and Epoxy Glass.

Always Having A Focus On Quality

Unquestionably, the company is always striving to offer an excellent reliable service. Which we, and our very large repeat business customer base, believe has successfully been achieved. A reputation built-up over many years. Also, with some individual staff members having 30 to 40 years’ experience in the field of plastics engineering. Essentially though, it is also essential to be able to back this up with an approved, robust quality system. Thus, ensuring that our customers are getting the components they require, not only on time, but to a high quality standard and finish.

Quality Plastics Machining

For many years we have been working with the B.S.I. maintaining our I.S.O. 9001 Quality standard. Combined with a long proven track record, our commitment to quality is never in doubt.

CNC Machining Plastic Guide – Routing

Routing is a common method for machining plastic parts. Most Plastics can be cut using CNC Routers. Below are guidelines for cutting several performance plastics. Most new machinery, comes with Computer Numerical Control (CNC). And so, routers are a popular choice for this type of machining. It begins, using CAD and CAM software on a computer. Next, CNC routers can follow instructions to create practically any design, no matter how precise. Also, as with other CNC machines, CNC routers are extremely effective. Certainly, in creating precision cuts into materials. Such as, plastic and wood, and can be used for producing prototypes, signage, engineering parts and much more.

CNC Machining Plastic Guide – Turning

As a rule, in the main, Plastic turning operations occur on a lathe. As such, rotating and manipulating the workpiece, thus, allowing a stationary cutting tool to cut and remove excess material as desired. In the same manner, CNC machining plastic via turning, again produces parts by “rotating” rod material, all the while simultaneously feeding a cutting tool into the turning material. The lathe is controlled by computer programs; ensuring meticulously exact components are produced and reproduced. Importantly, through modern computer technology and skilled operators, a component can now be created to the minutest detail and to the most rigid of designs using a Turning Lathe, with precise tolerances and a vast array of shapes.

CNC Machining Plastic Guide – Milling

While, CNC plastic turning operation requires the revolution of the plastic material, milling on the other hand, requires the cutting tool to do the rotating. Thus, cutting the desired shape and removing chips of plastic from the stationary workpiece. While milling in general is a proven method of machining plastics, Some milling techniques than others. But, in experienced hands, with the right capabilities, the ideal choice for prototyping and large batch plastic parts manufacturing, is milling.

CNC Machining Plastic Popular Materials of Choice

Certainly, specific plastics also maintain their own unique benefits. For example, the following are some of the most used plastics in machining operations:

  • Ultra-high molecular polyethylene UHMW, due to its high machinability
  • Nylon, due to its affordability, strength, durability, and corrosion and chemical resistance
  • Polycarbonate, due to its formability, high tensile strength, and resistance to cracking and abrasion
  • Polyether ether ketone PEEK, due to its chemical and wear resistance and ability to withstand high temperatures.

Prominently, ensuring the success of a project requires, choosing a material and machining operations that are well-suited for each other. When planning a plastic machining project, Sentinel Plastics Ltd can help with the main factors to consider.
